ATLANTA— Delta Air Lines (DL) has confirmed plans to launch nonstop flights between Atlanta (ATL) and Riyadh (RUH), marking its first direct connection to Saudi Arabia. The route forms part of the carrier’s broader strategic partnership with Riyadh Air (RX), announced earlier in 2024.

Delta CEO Ed Bastian stated that the service will begin in the fall, likely in 2026, operated by an Airbus A350. The move strengthens Delta’s Middle East presence while supporting Saudi Arabia’s push to expand global air connectivity.

Delta Atlanta to Riyadh Flights

Delta’s Atlanta–Riyadh service underscores growing collaboration between U.S. and Saudi carriers. The 7,283-mile route will provide the first direct U.S. link to Riyadh since the early 2000s and is a key component of Delta’s developing alliance with Riyadh Air, OMAAT reported.

Riyadh Air, backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, aims to transform Riyadh into a major global hub. Its launch aligns with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 plan to diversify the economy and attract 150 million annual visitors by the end of the decade.

Delta’s entry into this market will position it to benefit from Saudi incentives designed to encourage new international services to the capital.

From a network perspective, the partnership is strategic. Riyadh Air is expected to focus its long-haul operations on cities like New York (JFK), London (LHR), and Paris (CDG).

Delta’s Atlanta hub complements this by offering broad U.S. connectivity, allowing passengers to connect through ATL to destinations across North America.

Delta will deploy the Airbus A350-900 on the Atlanta–Riyadh route, reflecting the airline’s focus on fuel-efficient long-haul aircraft. The A350’s range and lower operating costs make it suitable for ultra-long routes where passenger demand may initially be limited.

The airline has not yet released a start date or ticket sale timeline, but the route is expected to launch after the completion of regulatory approvals and infrastructure coordination with Saudi authorities.

In parallel, Delta plans to resume flights from Atlanta to Tel Aviv (TLV), Israel, in spring 2026, signaling renewed interest in Middle East markets.

Why Riyadh Makes Sense for Delta

In the short term, Saudi subsidies make Riyadh an attractive addition to Delta’s international network. The government is offering financial incentives to carriers establishing new routes to Riyadh, reducing commercial risk, and encouraging global connectivity.

For Delta, which has a limited presence in the Middle East compared to American Airlines (AA) and United Airlines (UA), this partnership fills a network gap. Longer term, a strong alliance with Riyadh Air could allow Delta to reach markets in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia through efficient one-stop connections.

Still, analysts note that this route is more strategic than commercial at this stage. U.S. travelers are less familiar with Riyadh as a leisure destination compared to Dubai or Doha, but growing investment and tourism campaigns may change that over time.

Partnership with Riyadh Air

Riyadh Air has signed cooperation agreements with Air France–KLM and Virgin Atlantic, building an alliance network before its official launch.

The partnership with Delta gives the new airline valuable U.S. access while allowing Delta to align with an emerging Middle East hub outside the Gulf’s traditional powerhouses.

As both carriers deepen ties, future codeshare opportunities, coordinated schedules, and joint marketing could follow. For Delta, this is both a foothold in a new market and a hedge against being left out of the evolving aviation landscape connecting the U.S. and the Gulf.

Riyadh Travel Guide

Riyadh, the capital and largest city of Saudi Arabia, is a modern metropolis known for its economic power and cultural heritage. Home to around 7.6 million residents, the city stands as one of the most populous and influential centers in the Arab world.

King Khalid International Airport (RUH) connects Riyadh to major destinations worldwide, with airlines like Saudia (SV) and Emirates (EK) operating frequent flights. Surrounded by vast desert landscapes, the city offers a striking mix of tradition, innovation, and ambition.

Exploring the Heart of Saudi Arabia

Riyadh serves as the political, financial, and administrative hub of Saudi Arabia. The city’s skyline, marked by the Kingdom Center and Al Faisaliyah Center, reflects its rapid modernization. Yet, traces of its Bedouin past remain visible in its historic forts, traditional markets, and local customs.

Despite its urban scale, Riyadh maintains a deeply conservative culture shaped by Islamic traditions. Visitors are expected to respect local customs, especially regarding dress codes, prayer times, and public conduct.

Climate and Best Time to Visit

Riyadh has a desert climate characterized by extremely hot summers and mild winters. From May to September, temperatures can exceed 45°C, making outdoor exploration difficult. The most comfortable time to visit is between November and February, when average temperatures hover around 23°C and evenings are cool and pleasant.

Rainfall is scarce throughout the year, so planning outdoor activities during the cooler months ensures a better experience.

Getting There and Around

King Khalid International Airport (RUH) lies about 35 kilometers from Riyadh’s city center. It serves as a major hub for Saudia (SV) and offers direct connections to global destinations such as London, Dubai, and New York.

Within the city, taxis and ride-hailing services are the most common means of transportation. While personal vehicles dominate the roads due to affordable fuel prices, a modern metro system is under construction and expected to transform daily commuting in the near future.

Food and Dining Scene

Riyadh’s food scene reflects Saudi Arabia’s rich culinary heritage and growing cosmopolitan taste. Local dishes such as kabsa, mandi, and mutabbaq showcase the region’s love for spiced rice, grilled meats, and hearty flavors.

Camel meat and milk remain part of traditional diets, while coffee—an Arabian staple—holds cultural significance across the city.

High-end restaurants serve international cuisines alongside local favorites, and visitors will find both traditional eateries and upscale dining options across districts like Olaya and Al Malaz.

These sites together offer a blend of heritage, architecture, and insight into Saudi Arabia’s modern identity.

Shopping and Local Markets

Riyadh is known for its vast shopping malls and lively souqs. Al-Jazeera Mall remains one of the most popular retail destinations, offering a range of international and local brands. Traditional markets like Souq Al Zal provide a glimpse into old Arabia, selling spices, perfumes, and handcrafted goods.

Note that some malls restrict access for single men, and visitors should always observe local dress codes.

Culture, Festivals, and Customs

Saudi National Day (22 September) and Founding Day (22 February) are celebrated with pride across Riyadh. Religious holidays such as Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha mark significant moments in the Islamic calendar.

During prayer times, shops and offices close temporarily, and public spaces quiet down. Visitors are advised to respect these customs and local etiquette. Women are expected to dress modestly, and certain venues require female visitors to be accompanied.

Entertainment and Nightlife

Nightlife in Riyadh is limited due to the country’s alcohol restrictions. Social life typically revolves around family gatherings, cafés, and outdoor dining. The cooler evenings invite locals and tourists to enjoy cultural performances, coffee shops, and desert excursions under the stars.

Transportation Tips

Riyadh’s road network is modern and well-maintained. Renting a car can be practical for exploring the city, as public transport options remain limited. With the Riyadh Metro nearing completion, public mobility is expected to expand significantly.

Bottom Line

Delta Air Lines has formally confirmed its Atlanta (ATL)–Riyadh (RUH) route as part of its expanding partnership with Riyadh Air.

While financial incentives are driving the initial decision, the long-term plan is clearly strategic—positioning Delta to access a growing region and align with Saudi Arabia’s aviation ambitions.
